2018 MNHPC Fall ForumGrief and Hope in Life's Intersections: Multiple Responses to Dying and Grieving People featuring Ted Bowman, MDiv Friday November 16, 2018 | 8:00 AM- 3:30 PM Cost Compassionate and skillful practitioners* must be adaptive to do their work well. Not only are the situations of disruptive changes, illness, dying and death widely variable; the ways people grieve are many. Further, families are rarely dealing with one thing at a time. Even as dying is occurring, someone else may have lost a job, be receiving addiction treatment, moving house, or giving birth. Ambiguity requires flexibility. Both generalist caring and response to a specific facet of loss are often necessary. Further, disrupted roles and routines can add to spiritual distress. In this experiential workshop, the best of palliative and hospice adaptive caring for the range of presenting behaviors will be addressed. Attention will also be given the well-being of the practitioner. For if the practitioner is unhappy or distracted, he or she cannot help many people. *Practitioner refers to any and all volunteers and professional providing grief and bereavement care. ObjectivesBy the end of this educational activity, learners will be able to: 1) describe and apply perspectives and tools for losses in context; attention to the possibility of multiple losses within a family even while someone may be dying 2) distinguish conspicuous or tangible losses including dying AND psychosocial, spiritual and meaning losses 3) name and discuss various tools of communicating with grieving persons, some which were reinforced in the workshop, others added 4) develop a plan for continuing use of the content and process of the workshop Target AudienceThe Fall Forum is intended for hospice and palliative care professionals and volunteers and all members of the interdisciplinary team.
